Rails stretch away from the viewer through a bed of loose gravel, with green trees closing in on both sides and the line narrowing to a point near the horizon. The composition is built on that single vanishing line, a favorite device of railroad photographers who wanted to show how long and straight a route could run. Gravel ballast was the standard bed for track because it drained well and held the ties in place, and the greenery suggests a rural or lightly settled stretch of line rather than a yard or depot. Pictures like this one were often made to document the right-of-way itself, the everyday infrastructure that carried freight and passengers across the country.
