A railroad crossing sign and a stop sign stand side by side at the edge of a set of tracks, a pairing that shows how rail and road traffic were once marked for drivers at the same point. Crossing signs of this kind became common as automobiles spread through the early twentieth century and collisions at grade crossings grew into a serious safety problem. Placing a stop sign beside the crossing sign asked drivers to halt before the rails, look both ways, and proceed only when the way was clear. Look closely at the lettering and posts, which reveal how these warnings were standardized over the decades.
