Cut through rock and tangled woods, the tracks in this view disappear around a bend, a reminder of how much blasting and hand labor went into laying a line through hilly country. Railroad cuttings like this one were among the hardest parts of a 19th-century line, since engineers had to remove tons of stone by hand and black powder before a single rail could be set. Pictures of such passages were popular in America during the late 1800s, when the railroad stood for progress and the wild landscape it crossed was still close at hand. The scene shows the rail line as both a feat of engineering and a path cutting into an untouched wilderness.
