The subject here is the track itself: parallel steel rails laid across timber ties and bedded in gravel or crushed-stone ballast, the plain working surface that carried so much of the country's freight and passenger traffic. By the late 19th century, American railroads had spread across much of the continent, and the track was often the most visible sign of a line's reach into towns, farms, and industrial yards. Pictures that focus on rails rather than trains or stations invite attention to the engineering: the spacing, the angle of the ties, and how the lines converge toward the horizon.
