A train of the Lehigh Valley Railroad runs beside the Lehigh River in eastern Pennsylvania, a route the line used to haul anthracite coal from the nearby mountains to market. This picture is a copy of an older photograph from an unidentified source, made as a glass dry plate negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American scenery and industry in the early 1900s, catalogued it, so it records how the railroad and river corridor looked in that decade. Because it reproduces a source print, fine detail may be softer than in an original, but the rail line and river valley remain clear.
