Crowds gathered at the depot in Ada, a small town in northwestern Minnesota, to hear William Howard Taft speak from his train in 1908. That year Taft, the Republican nominee for president, campaigned extensively by rail, and brief stops where candidates addressed townspeople from the train were a standard part of American campaigning before radio. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose New York news photo service supplied images to newspapers across the country. Its glass negative records a moment when voters came to the railroad to see a candidate in person.
