The Jungfrau railway station at the Eigergletscher sits beneath the north face of the Eiger, with the Rothstock rising beside it, a setting that gave the line its dramatic route through the Bernese Oberland. Construction of the Jungfrau railway began in 1896, financed by Swiss entrepreneur Adolf Guyer-Zeller, so this view captures the landscape at the start of that ambitious project. The Detroit Publishing Company sold this photochrom, made from Swiss originals, as a color souvenir. Its multiple stone-printed layers render the meadows and rock with a painterly softness that suits the scene.
