From a low angle below the railroad station, this view shows Zacatecas climbing the hillsides of a narrow valley in north-central Mexico, a silver-mining city whose wealth long depended on the mines around it. The Detroit Publishing Company made the 18 by 22 inch glass negative, and it issued the scene both as a single plate and as the right half of a two-part panorama. The date is uncertain, listed as about 1891, and the notes suggest the Mexican Central Railway probably commissioned the work, which makes the station the natural vantage point.
