This view is catalogued as a railroad station at the Suez Canal in Egypt, a site where rail and waterway travel met at the isthmus connecting the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Rail service reached Suez in the late 1850s, before the canal opened in 1869, so the station served passengers and freight moving between Cairo and the canal's ports. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that distributed news and travel images in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of a busy transit hub in that era.
