The railroad station at Ismailia takes its place in the story of the Suez Canal, a town that Ferdinand de Lesseps founded in the early 1860s on the shore of Lake Timsah, roughly halfway along the waterway. The rail line served the construction effort, carrying workers, engineers and supplies across the desert. This 1869 illustration belongs to a set of views of the canal project, which was completed that same year, so it captures a station tied to a major engineering undertaking at the moment it was finished.
