The Eigerhöhle, or Eiger cave, is a set of openings cut through the rock of the Eiger's north face, where the Jungfrau Railway passes on its climb toward the high passes of the Bernese Oberland. This print shows the view through those openings to the station below. The railway was conceived in the 1890s as a way to bring visitors to the snowfields and peaks, and the tunnel and station work on the Eiger was among its most difficult engineering tasks. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, colored each image by hand-registered layers of lithographic stone, giving the scene the soft, painted look that made these views popular with American buyers.
