This photograph shows a small station that took its name from Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, yet served Little Switzerland, a mountain resort community in western North Carolina. Railroad depots like this one were the main link between summer visitors and the Blue Ridge hamlets, which depended on trains for guests, mail, and freight. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but the image fits the early twentieth century, when rail lines pushed into the region's mountains and resort towns grew up along them. The station's name, which points to a landmark rather than the town it served, is worth noticing for anyone tracing how these places were named.
