This stereograph follows the Central Pacific grade below Cisco and Crystal Lake in the Sierra Nevada, in what is now Placer County, California. In 1865 the railroad was still climbing toward the summit, and the ground near Cisco was among the hardest it faced, with steep cuts through granite and heavy winter snow. The catalog also tags the card with Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, and Civil War engineering, which does not match the title, so researchers should check the location against the original card.
