A railroad train on display at the 1889 Paris Exposition sets this view apart from the fair's many pictures of towers and pavilions. The exhibition marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars, where engineering and industry were presented as the proudest achievements of the age. The print comes from the Albert Tissandier Collection, made by an illustrator and architect who recorded the fair, and it shows how railways were displayed to the public as symbols of modern progress.
