Pershing's arrival at a Paris railroad station records the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces at the start of his work in France. He reached Paris in June 1917, and his arrival signaled that the United States was committing troops to the Western Front in earnest. The print comes from Central News Photo Service, a news photo agency, and its undated record places it somewhere between 1914 and 1918. Such press photographs were made to be published quickly, so they show how the public saw the American war effort as it began.
