Hallettsville, a small town in Lavaca County, Texas, grew up around the railroad line that reached it in the 1870s, and this photograph shows the depot that tied the community to the wider rail network. The subject headings also list carriages and coaches, a reminder that passengers and freight arrived by horse-drawn vehicles as well as by train. Dating to roughly 1890 to 1910, the view belongs to an era when rail stations were the busiest public spaces in many Texas towns.
