Few lines carried more weight in 1918 than the Trans-Siberian Railroad, which the catalog records under its Russian name, Velikaia Sibirskaia magistral', the Great Siberian Trunk Line. This view of a station on that route shows the people who gathered on its platforms. The line, stretching roughly 5,000 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, had been completed only in the years before World War I. By 1918, civil war and revolutionary upheaval had made it a vital and contested artery for troops, refugees, and supplies, and stations like this one were where those movements were most visible.
