A rail line runs through dense tropical forest near Bluefields, on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, with the view stretching toward Greytown, the port at the mouth of the San Juan River. In the late 1800s this coastal region was far from the Pacific cities that dominated Nicaraguan politics, and it had its own history under the Mosquito Coast. British influence there lasted until 1860, and the area was not fully folded into the Nicaraguan state until 1894. Rail and river routes were the main ways to move goods and people through this humid, lightly settled country, so the track here shows how outsiders tried to connect the coast to wider trade.
