Few views in the Detroit Publishing Company's railroad series show the working side of rail travel as plainly as this one, a Pennsylvania Railroad ferry at New Brunswick, New Jersey. Ferries like this carried rail cars and passengers across water where a bridge was impractical or not yet built, which made them a key link in the line's network. The Detroit Publishing Company, active in the early 1900s, sold photographs of American towns, scenery and industry, often to travelers and businesses. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates to about 1905, and its surviving record preserves a moment when water crossings still shaped how freight and passengers moved through the region.
