The Great International Railway Suspension Bridge spanned the Niagara River gorge between the United States and Canada, and this print pairs it with the falls it was built to cross near. Designed by John A. Roebling, the bridge opened in 1855 and carried trains on a lower deck while wagons and pedestrians used the upper one. Its wire-cable construction made it one of the notable engineering achievements of its day, and it was a striking sight for travelers arriving by rail at the border. Currier and Ives issued many views like this one, and the pairing of machine and waterfall was a favorite theme of the period.
