This view centers on the Grand Trunk Bridge, the steel arch railroad crossing over the Niagara River that links Niagara Falls, New York, with Ontario, and it shows the mills that lined the river nearby. By around 1900, the Niagara gorge had become a dense industrial corridor, drawing manufacturers to the cheap hydroelectric power being developed from the falls. The print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's photochrom process, which turned black-and-white photographs into color lithographs with soft, painterly tones. The company compiled albums like this one as a catalog for its own office, so the image also documents how it marketed the region's scenery and industry to customers.
