This wood engraving shows the new railroad bridge spanning the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville, Maryland, where the river marks the boundary between the upper and lower Chesapeake. The crossing was rebuilt after Confederate troops burned the earlier bridge in 1863, and its completion was a notable step in restoring the rail link between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The engraving was made from a photograph by the Philadelphia firm Schrieber & Son and published in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in December 1866, when such woodcut reproductions were the main way most readers saw new photographs.
