Few stereographs show the Biwa Canal's inclined railway, which lifted cargo boats between the canal's two water levels on the slope above Kyoto. Built in the 1890s during Japan's Meiji-era push to modernize transportation, the canal linked Lake Biwa to the city, and the incline let vessels cross the steep change in elevation without a conventional lock system. The card's caption, copyrighted by C.H. Graves and issued by the Universal Photo Art Co., dates the view to about 1902, though the record notes these details are unverified. Stereo views like this one were popular with American audiences, who often saw such engineering works as emblems of a rapidly industrializing Japan.
