Wagons and railroad workers share the frame in this wood engraving, drawn by A.R. Waud for the July 17, 1875, issue of *Harper's Weekly*. The covered wagons beside the track suggest how rail construction met a landscape where overland travel was still the common way to move people and goods. Waud was a frequent illustrator for the magazine, and he drew many scenes of American expansion for its readers. Printed in a weekly with a wide middle-class audience, the picture shows the railroad as a force reshaping the open plains in the mid-1870s.
