Published in the August 11, 1877, issue of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* across pages 388 and 389, this wood engraving documents the Great Railroad Strike that swept the country that summer. The walkout began in July after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad cut wages, and it quickly grew into a national upheaval, with crowds and militia clashing in cities including Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Illustrated weeklies like Leslie's gave readers far from the rail yards a visual account of the disorder, so the engraving also shows how the press framed labor unrest in the Gilded Age.
