Taken on August 10, 1922, this National Photo Company print shows guards on duty during the railroad strike in Washington, D.C. That summer, railway shopmen across the country walked off the job to protest wage cuts ordered by the Railroad Labor Board, and the walkout disrupted freight and passenger service in many cities. Railroads posted guards to protect company property and the workers who replaced the strikers, and scenes like this one appeared often in news photography of the period. The National Photo Company was a Washington firm that documented local events, so the picture offers a close look at the capital during the strike.
