Edward Henry Harriman, who built much of his fortune on American railroads including the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific, sits for this outdoor portrait alongside his wife, Mary Williamson Averell Harriman. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photography archive that Bain, a New York photographer, assembled in the early 1900s, and it dates to about 1909, the year Harriman died. Outdoor family portraits of this kind were a common way for wealthy figures of the era to present themselves as private citizens rather than as industrial power brokers.
