Mrs. Anna E. Taylor is the woman being helped over the rocks below Niagara Falls, and the scene recalls her October 1901 barrel ride over the Horseshoe Falls, the first such trip by a woman known to survive. Stereo cards like this one, issued by firms such as Griffith & Griffith, were bought in quantity by tourists eager to see the falls and its daredevils. The caption tags are old and unverified, but they place the card within that trade. Through a stereoscope, the rough shoreline shows how close visitors could get to the water.
