The caption names a Mrs. Taylor preparing to enter the Cataract of Niagara, and the best-known woman of that name to attempt it is Annie Edson Taylor, who went over the Horseshoe Falls in a barrel in October 1901 and survived. Her stunt drew crowds to the gorge and made the falls a national spectacle, though it also alarmed local officials, who later moved to restrict such attempts. The card was issued by Griffith & Griffith, a Niagara Falls firm whose views were sold as stereographs, pairs of photographs meant to be seen in three dimensions through a parlor viewer. The caption also files the subject under "daredevils," a label that reflects the period's fascination with people who tested the falls.
