Few Spanish Civil War posters combine as many left-wing symbols as this one: a raised fist, a hammer and sickle, and the Catalan word "Libertat!" (Liberty). It was printed in Barcelona for the Federación Anarquista Ibérica, the anarchist federation that was a major force in the city's labor movement and militias after the military uprising of July 1936. The mix of anarchist and communist imagery reflects the uneasy wartime alliance of Republican groups fighting Franco's Nationalist forces, a unity that was often strained behind the lines.
