Many Spanish Civil War posters relied on emotion, but this one states its purpose plainly: a donation for the widows of antifascists executed in enemy territory. The sponsor, the Socorro Rojo Internacional (International Red Aid), was linked to the international left and ran relief for Republican families during the war. Its appeals were designed to draw money from supporters at home and abroad. The poster is undated beyond a range of 1936 to 1939, a period when the Republic and its allies were struggling to care for civilians and for the families of those killed at the front and behind the lines.
