The Spanish title, *Lo que hay detrás del comunismo*, translates as "What Lies Behind Communism," and the poster answers that question with a skull paired with a hammer and sickle. Posters like this were printed in great numbers during the Spanish Civil War, which ran from 1936 to 1939. Both the Republican government and the Nationalist rebels under Francisco Franco used them to rally supporters and cast the conflict in stark moral terms. The anti-communist imagery here fits the messaging common on the right, where the hammer and sickle stood for a feared revolution modeled on the Soviet Union. The record names no artist, but the bold color and direct symbolism are typical of wartime lithography.
