Its French caption, *Que fais-tu pour empêcher cela?* ("What are you doing to prevent this?"), marks it as one of several language versions the Library of Congress holds, alongside Spanish and English editions. The design pairs a mother and child with the threat of aircraft, reflecting the air raids that battered Madrid during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. Issued under the Madrid defense council and the Republican government's propaganda ministry, the poster was meant to rally civilians and sympathetic foreign viewers to the Republic's defense of the capital.
