Citizens: the Republic calls you to the front or to work" sets its message in the imperative, offering men two options and no third. Issued by Spain's Ministry of Public Instruction under the Directorate General of Fine Arts, the color lithograph dates from the Civil War years, between 1936 and 1939. The Republican government, fighting a military uprising that began in July 1936, needed both soldiers for the front and workers to keep farms and factories running. Its phrasing, which warns against idle men, shows how wartime propaganda cast labor as a civic duty.
