Its French-language title, "Que fais-tu pour empêcher cela?" ("What are you doing to prevent this?"), asks the viewer to act against the air attacks on civilians shown in the subject headings: mothers and children threatened from the sky. The poster was issued by the Junta Delegada de Defensa de Madrid and the Ministry of Propaganda of the Spanish Republic during the Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. Madrid, the Republican capital, was bombed repeatedly from late 1936, and posters like this one were used to rally support for civil defense and the war effort. The Library of Congress holds several editions in different languages and sizes, which suggests the appeal was meant to reach audiences beyond Spain.
