The title makes the argument on its own: slaughtering a cow or a hen supplies a meal today but leaves hunger tomorrow, because the animal that would have produced eggs, milk or offspring is gone. Issued by the Ministry of Public Instruction's Directorate General of Fine Arts in Madrid between 1936 and 1939, the poster belongs to the Republican government's wartime campaign of printed appeals. Food was scarce in the Republican zone as the war dragged on, and the poster asks civilians to hold back on livestock for the sake of the months ahead. Its bold color lithography reflects the style of much public messaging from the period.
