The poster's title, "El obrero que se embriaga, le roba el pan a sus hijos," translates as "The worker who gets drunk steals bread from his children." It was issued by the Spanish labor and social welfare secretariat during the Civil War, when the Republican government used posters to shape everyday conduct on the home front. Its message ties personal drinking to family hardship, a moral argument that suited a government trying to keep workers productive and families fed during the fighting. The color lithograph is one of many Spanish Civil War posters held by the Library of Congress.
