A Brazilian steamer photographed in Washington in January 1863 is the subject here, recorded on a glass stereograph negative made with the wet collodion process. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in the capital during the Civil War, when Washington swelled with troops, government offices, and river traffic. Wet collodion required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still damp, so each negative had to be made on the spot. Stereographs were taken as paired images that viewed through a stereoscope gave a sense of depth, and this ship reminds us that wartime Washington was also a busy river port.
