The picture shows the steamer *Fort Jackson* at Hampton Roads, Virginia, in December 1864, when the harbor was a major Union anchorage and transit point for ships supplying the armies and blockade fleet. Its glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop the plate on the spot, so the image reflects the slow, deliberate work of wartime documentary photography. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a prominent Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been revised. The image belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
