The steamer Robert Fulton carries the name of the engineer who built the Clermont, the steamboat that made its first successful run up the Hudson River in 1807. The cataloger's title says the river is only a possibility, so the location rests on the boat's name rather than a confirmed caption. The picture survives as a 5 by 7 inch glass negative, made between 1910 and 1930 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American scenery and travel. The record also notes that the image was copied from a print and reversed, so this negative is a secondhand record of the original view.
