The steamer *Hiawatha* is the subject here, photographed on the Black River at Port Huron, Michigan, a short waterway that feeds into the St. Clair River near Lake Huron. The picture dates from roughly 1893 to 1905, when river steamers carried passengers and freight through the St. Clair and Black River corridor and wharves like these were busy with cargo. The Detroit Publishing Company made the negative, and its large-format glass plates from this era documented American towns, waterways and commerce for travel promotion. Wharves and steamboats of this period show how much river traffic shaped small Great Lakes ports before rail and trucking took over.
