Seen from the deck of a passing steamer, this view shows a planter's hacienda set back from the Babahoyo River in Ecuador. The Babahoyo flows through the country's lowland coast, where large estates grew cacao for export in the early 1900s, and the house sits as a reminder of how wealth in that region was tied to river transport. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm, made this stereograph around 1907 for home viewers who wanted glimpses of distant places. Its vantage from the water shows how travelers of the period usually saw such estates.
