The steamer *Irma* is shown working the water near the Machuca Rapids on the San Juan River, a waterway that runs from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean and forms part of the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Rapids like these made the river hard to navigate, so shallow-draft steamers were essential for moving passengers and cargo along its course. The photograph dates from the late 1880s or early 1890s, a period when the river route drew attention as a possible path for an interoceanic canal.
