The vessel named here is the steamer *Robert Fulton*, a name that honors the inventor whose *Clermont* made the first commercially successful steamboat run on the Hudson in 1807. The catalog places the boat on the Hudson only as a possibility, since the title was devised by the cataloger, so the river setting is a reasonable reading rather than a confirmed fact. The glass negative is a copy of an existing print, made between 1910 and 1930, when steamboats still carried passengers along the Hudson's river towns. Its origin in the Detroit Publishing Company collection ties it to that firm's wide documentation of American scenery and transportation.
