From the deck of a passing steamer, this 1907 view shows a planter's hacienda set back from the banks of the Babahoyo River in Ecuador's coastal lowlands. The river carried boats and cargo toward Guayaquil, and in the early 1900s the surrounding estates grew cacao, the crop that dominated the country's export economy at the time. The view from the water shows how these riverside estates were seen by travelers arriving by boat, and the publisher's copyright registration suggests the photograph was meant for wide distribution.
