The side-wheeler *Albany* was one of the passenger steamers of the Hudson River Day Line, which carried travelers between New York City and Albany on daytime runs. These boats offered a leisurely alternative to the railroad, and their large paddle-wheel steamers were a familiar sight on the river during the years this glass plate was made. The negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities, scenery and travel in the early 1900s. Glass plates of this 8 by 10 inch size were valued for the sharp detail they could record.
