The Green Line steamer in this c1940 print is one of the packet boats that carried freight and passengers on the western rivers, at a time when steam still handled much of the regional trade. The photograph comes from Caufield & Shook, a Louisville commercial studio that documented river craft and river cities, and the print was registered for copyright under the studio's name. Packet steamers of this kind were recognizable by their tall stacks, long decks, and paddlewheels, and by the 1940s they were giving way to diesel towboats and trucks. The picture preserves a working vessel near the end of that era.
