Commodore Matthew C. Perry's steam frigate *Mississippi* steams to the rescue of the American steamer *Hunter*, a French bark taken as a prize, and an American pilot boat, all wrecked on Green Island reef off Vera Cruz on March 21, 1847. The scene comes from Lieutenant Henry Walke's *Naval Portfolio*, a set of color lithographs of naval actions in the Mexican War, published in New York by Sarony & Major. The war's naval operations supported the U.S. Army's campaign against Vera Cruz that same month, and Walke's views were among the more popular pictorial records of the Navy's role in it. The sea and rigging are rendered with the bright color typical of the series.
