Small boats ferrying passengers out to a larger steamer were a familiar sight at Patras, the Greek port on the Gulf of Corinth, where many emigrants began the long sea crossing to America around 1910. Greek emigration to the United States grew sharply in the early twentieth century, and Patras was one of the main departure points for people leaving villages and poorer regions of the country. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, which sold stereographs in large numbers to American households that viewed them through hand-held stereoscopes. The date and caption come from old, unverified records, so the scene is best read as a typical moment of departure.
