A reproduction of a drawing by cartoonist Rollin Kirby, made for the New York *World*, takes aim at Germany over the torpedoing of the Channel steamer *Sussex* in March 1916. A German submarine sank the French passenger ship in the English Channel, and several Americans were among the injured, which fueled U.S. anger over submarine warfare. The cartoons of the period show how sharply American opinion turned against Berlin, and the crisis led Germany to pledge in May 1916 that it would limit its attacks on merchant and passenger ships.
